ESSAY RULES & REGULATIONS
A. All essays submitted must be received no later than Feb.28,
2011. The winners will be notified
prior to the State Convention.
B. First, second, and third papers will be chosen from the student and
technologist categories.
C. Schools of Radiologic Technology will not be limited on the number of
essays submitted, but will be limited to only one (1) essay per author
(student).
D. Judges will be selected by the Essay Chairperson and the judging will be
based on the following:
1. ORIGINALITY
a. Any subject
appropriate to any aspect of the field of radiology and/or medical imaging will
be deemed suitable material for judging.
b. Essays must be
in the author’s own words, but the ideas do not have to be original.
c. Any ideas that
are not original should be foot-noted and a bibliography provided. Three or more references must be used if the
idea is not original.
2. QUALITY
a. Essays should
be informative and educational. They may
cover the technical aspects, as well as moral or ethical issues.
3. ORGANIZATION
OF MATERIAL
a. The material
must be presented in an orderly manner and logical sequence.
b. Visual aids may
be used, but are not required. Papers
that do not use them will not be penalized.
(Power point capabilities will not be available for the winner’s
presentation.)
4. MECHANICS
a. Grammar,
spelling, and punctuation must be correct and papers should be neat.

CRITERIA FOR SUBMITTING ESSAYS
A. Four (4) copies of each essay shall be submitted to the essay
chairperson:
1. The original - identified with cover
page and title page (see # 3 & 4)
2. Three (3) copies -
unidentified (title page only)
3. Technologists’
essays should have a cover page that includes the technologist’s name, address,
and phone number on the original paper only.
4. Students’
essays should have a cover page that includes the student’s name, the name of
the school, school address & phone number on the original paper
only.
5. All entrants should
keep a copy of their essay.
B. The essay should be at least 1500 words, but no more
than 2400 words in length.
C. Essays must:
1. Be typed and double spaced
with adequate margins (1" suggested.)
2. Have numbered pages in the
upper right hand corner and be fastened securely in the upper left hand
corner. No plastic covers,
binders, etc., please.
3. Include a title page on all
copies.
D. Essays should be of such quality as to be suitable for entry in the
national contest, sponsored by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists
(ASRT).
E. No part of an essay that has previously won an award will be permitted
to be used in competition at the “state” level.
F. All entrants must be members in good standing in the Arkansas Society of
Radiologic Technologists (ArSRT).
G. All entrants must register for the State Convention.
1. Technologists must pay a
$10.00 entry fee in addition to the Convention registration fee.
2. Students may register for
the Convention at a reduced rate. This
registration fee covers any and all competitions. Winners will also receive a free ticket to
the Honor’s Luncheon. (Any others
wishing to attend the awards luncheon must purchase a separate ticket.)
All winners of the essay contest are required to attend the
Honors Luncheon on Friday of the Convention & will receive awards at that
time. First place winner will present
his/her paper at this time. Note: Power point capabilities will not
be available. The luncheon will be
courtesy of the ArSRT.
H. All essays must be received no later than February 28, 2011.

REFERENCES & FOOTNOTES (ENDNOTES)
The
following guidelines are to be used by students and technologists submitting
essays for the contest held by the Arkansas Society of Radiologic Technologists
at their annual convention. This format
was developed and modified according to that used in the American
Psychological Association Style Manual (APA).
FOOTNOTES
(ENDNOTES): Endnotes with references are
much preferred (not required) over footnotes, and should be included on a
separate page(s) following the text. All factual material must be end
noted in alphabetical order. Endnote format should according to
the Publication Manual of the
American
Psychological Association (APA style) modified as shown in these examples of
common
references:
JOURNAL ARTICLE: Last name of
author(s) and first initial of first name. (year of
publication). Article title (only first
word capitalized). Journal Title. Volume Number (Issue
Number) Inclusive Pages.
EXAMPLE: Foegelle W, Couch G
