QUIZ BOWL RULES
The
PURPOSE of the Larry Davis Memorial Quiz Bowl is to:
Ø provide a healthy educational experience
for students in the radiologic sciences.
Ø foster mutual
respect and teamwork among students.
Ø encourage
student participation in the annual meeting of the Arkansas Society of Radiologic Technologists.
Ø recognize
students who demonstrate expertise in the art and science of the radiologic sciences.
TEAM
INFORMATION
1. JRCERT accredited radiography schools may submit teams comprised of 4 students per team for the quiz bowl competition.
2. There is no limit on number of teams representing a school.
3. A maximum of 3 students may compete at one time, though each team may have an alternate member.
4. Alternate team members may not be substituted during a match with another school unless the judges determine extenuation circumstances (i.e., a team member becomes physically ill).
5. Once a student is designated to a team and the first session of competition begins, they cannot change teams. If competition occurs for more than one session or day, team members cannot be changed between sessions.
6. All competing students must be currently registered and in good standing the school they are representing.
7. Competing students may not hold registration, certification, or licensure in any radiation or imaging modality.
8. All competing students must be student members of the ArSRT and must be registered for the ArSRT meeting at the time of competition.
9. A faculty member from each competing school must attend and assist with all sessions and/or days of the competition. Faculty members are expected to assist through the end of the competition, even if all their teams have been eliminated. Assist is defined as moderator, judge, timer, scorekeeper, door keeper, or any other duty assigned by the person responsible for the quiz bowl competition. Schools are not required to submit quiz bowl questions for use in the competition, although submissions are encouraged and welcomed.
10. Deadline for submission of teams is the start of the planning meeting, which is scheduled immediately prior to the start of competition. Early registration of team(s) is required.
ORDER
OF COMPETITION / TEAM PLACEMENT
Ø Team placement will be determined by a
drawing prior to the start of the competition.
Ø The quiz bowl will be a double elimination, direct competition tournament. No team will be eliminated until they have lost twice. The championship team may have one loss, or no losses, depending on the results of the competition.
DURING
COMPETITION
Ø No
challenges or other interruptions of competition will be permitted. All decisions of the judges are final, and
even if unfair, cannot be reversed.
Ø Complaints
about procedures, judging interpretations, etc. may be submitted to the quiz
bowl organizers following a complete quiz bowl session, or at any later time.
Ø Complaints
may not be submitted during, or between competitions, in an individual
session. Faculty and students should
realize that the quiz bowl competition is not perfect and, like any competitive
event, there may be some instances of poor judgement
during competition. The quiz bowl
officials will make every effort to operate a fun and fair competition and everyone
is strongly encouraged to help keep the event enjoyable. Students should focus on the next question,
not on past judgements by quiz bowl officials.
Ø Faculty
may not serve as moderator, judge, or timer for a competition in which their
students/school are competing.
Ø Competition
will occur with two teams sitting at tables equipped with an electronic scoring
system. Teams will be able to see the
moderator, as well as opposing team members.
Teams will be able to see the score at all times.
Ø A
single competition will consist of 20 verbal questions. If the score is tied after 20 questions
single questions will be asked until the tie is broken. Should a large number of teams be competing,
a preliminary round of competition consisting of 10 questions may be held. This is subject to change, depending on
numbers of teams competing.
Ø The
moderator and/or judges may indicated that a question
is invalid and require a new question to be read. Invalid questions may occur due to
re-occurring questions, mid-reading by the moderator, answers heard from the
audience, or questions that have objectionable typos, or grossly unclear
content.
Ø Individual
team members must press a button and be acknowledged by the moderator before
answering a question. If the button is
pressed before the moderator has completed the question, the moderator will
stop reading the question and an answer will be expected without hearing the
entire question.
Ø After
acknowledgment, the team may confer, but must begin their answer within 10
seconds of acknowledgment. Once the
moderator or judges have ruled on an answer, students may not provide
additional information. Judges may
request further information from a team.
Ø Answers
from a team that has not been acknowledged by the moderator are not invalid and
may be used by the acknowledged team, as long as the time limits are not
exceeded.
Ø If
neither team presses a button within 10 seconds after the moderator reads the
question, the question will be ruled dead by the timer, the answer read by the
moderator, and the next question read.
Ø An
answer may be given by any team member and must be clearly stated into the
microphone.
SCORING
Ø Scoring
will occur as follows:
+1 point for a correct answer
0 points for
incorrect answer when the moderator was not interrupted
-1 point for incorrect answer when the moderator was
interrupted
Ø There
is no penalty for interrupting the moderator before the question is completely
read, as long as the correct answer is given (+1 point). However, if the moderator is interrupted
& an incorrect answer is given, the team will be penalized (-1 point).
Ø The
moderator and /or judges will indicate that the moderator was interrupted after
the answer has been given (by team A).
If an incorrect answer is given by team A, the opposing team ( B) will have the question re-read and may then answer or
pass. If the opposing team ( B) interrupts the moderator during the re-read
and answers incorrectly then they, too, will be penalized -1 point.
Ø Each
team member may bring a non-programmable calculator to the competition
table. Paper and pencils will be
provided. Any notes or formulae written
at the table during competition must be removed at the end of the competition.
Ø Students
may not bring previous notes back to the competition table during
subsequent competitions.
QUIZ BOWL COORDINATOR:
Ø Shall be an educator and current member in good standing of the
ArSRT.
Ø Shall
appoint all officials necessary for operating the competition, arrange competition
schedule and meeting rooms, and be responsible for all other aspects of
operating the competition.
EDUCATION CHAIR:
Ø Shall be responsible for notifying schools within the state of the
competition. This notification
should include updated rules and procedures, contact information for team
application(s), and deadline(s) for entry registration.
MODERATOR:
Ø Will
read the questions to the competing teams and make decisions on responses for
all questions not referred to the judges.
The moderator reserves the right to refer any decision to the judges, at
which time the judges decision will be final.
Ø Shall read the answer to each question that is not answered
correctly by a student, after all student responses and judging decisions have
been made.
TIMER:
Ø Shall keep the score on an overhead projector that is visible to
both teams and the audience.
Ø Shall
use a stop-watch and call “time” 10 seconds after a team has been acknowledged
by the moderator to answer.
QUESTIONS:
Ø Shall
be constructed and worded to represent the expected level of didactic and
clinical proficiency that a radiographer should possess at the completion of an
accredited program.
Ø Shall not present a “true-false” choice. This requires re-wording of questions with
answers such as “yes-no”, “cephalad-caudad”,
“anterior-posterior”, “light-dark”, “high-low”, etc.
Ø Shall be divided into the general categories used by the ARRT.
Ø Shall
have answers verifiable from textbooks pertinent to the study of radiography
and shall not include information from journal articles that is not verifiable
from a textbook.
Ø Shall be secured by quiz bowl officials. Under not circumstances shall anyone reveal
any competition questions to any member of a quiz bowl team.
